Reality vs Propaganda: BBC Promotes Mahrang Baloch’s Fake Claims on College Expenses

“A 25-minute, 33-second interview titled ‘Waiting Women for Missing Loved Ones’ released by the @BBCUrdu 4 days ago has been viewed over 216,000 times on the @BBCUrdu‘s official YouTube channel. The report has been shared by hundreds of people on social media, especially on X (formerly Twitter), along with their comments.

The @BBCUrdu‘s reporter, @FarhatJavedR, interviewed a young girl named Masooma, whose father is allegedly a missing person, a teenager named Saira Baloch, whose brother is also missing, and an elderly woman named Janat Bibi, whose son is on the list of missing persons. The @BBCUrdu also conducted an in-depth interview with Dr. @MahrangBaloch_, the chairperson of the @BalochYakjehtiC.

After the @BBCUrdu uploaded the interview, a new debate emerged in Pakistan. On social media, some people supported the claims made by the women, while others criticized the @BBCUrdu for spreading unverified information.

Fact-Check:

Dr. @MahrangBaloch_ claimed during the interview that she didn’t have enough money to pay her medical college fees during her first year of MBBS. She said her mother sold her clothes to pay her 1st year fee and sold her jewellery to pay the 2nd year fee. However, an investigation by Fact-Check Watch Dog found documents that reveal Dr. @MahrangBaloch_ was admitted to Bolan Medical College on a quota with only 67% marks in intermediate and received a government scholarship that covered her annual fees of Rs. 36,000 and a monthly stipend of Rs. 6,000.

The @BBCUrdu report appears to have used emotions to fuel the cases of enforced disappearances and distorted facts.”
